How a World Tour team trains in the winter

CYCLING CYCLING TEAMS TRAINING

This is how the AG2R Citroën Team prepares during the winter.

Have you ever wondered how a WorldTour team trains during the winter? If so, you're in luck. In this article, we're going to take a look at how the cyclists of one of the WorldTour teams prepare during the coldest time of the year.

Winter Preparation

The AG2R Citroën Team is one of the most prominent WorldTour teams in professional cycling. With a mix of young and experienced riders, the team has achieved some impressive victories in major races such as the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia.

During the winter, the AG2R Citroën team prepares for the upcoming season with a series of rigorous training and a focus on nutrition and physical well-being.

According to the team's sports director, Julien Jurdie, the team's riders begin their winter season with a "conditioning period," which focuses on improving leg endurance and power.

During this period, AG2R Citroën riders participate in group training, where they focus on both long and short rides, often on the road or on mountain bikes. They also do gym work and stationary bike training to enhance their endurance and power.

Focus on Speed and Power

As the winter progresses, the team begins to shift their training focus more toward speed and power.

This is achieved through high-intensity workouts, such as sprints and pace changes, as well as by using rollers and track training.

In addition, AG2R Citroën team riders also participate in winter races, such as the Challenge Mallorca, as another way to prepare for the season.

Nutrition is Key

Nutrition is crucial for AG2R Citroën team riders during their winter training. Riders are expected to consume a balanced diet rich in proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats to aid in muscle recovery and provide energy during intense workouts.

Maintaining a healthy diet in line with their training is essential to perform at their best in each of these workouts.

Back to the Bike

Overall, the AG2R Citroën team focuses on proper season preparation, with a mix of endurance, speed, and power training, along with a focus on nutrition and physical well-being.

This enables them to be fit and ready to tackle the races of the season with confidence.

If one thing stands out in this training example after a rest period, it's the need to take it slow. Considering that professional cyclists don't return from vacation to give their maximum effort but rather take it easy, it's even more important for amateurs.

After a few weeks of excess, rest, and little activity, it's crucial that we start riding slowly. Only then can we enjoy this sport we love for the rest of the year without risking injury due to a loss of physical fitness.
