The old southern road and Arico

The scenic Carretera Vieja, or TF-28, stretches for more than 100 km and features over a thousand bends. Crossing the island’s mid-altitude countryside, it links the capital with the south. Its succession of climbs and descents makes it a firm favourite with cyclists.

We start in Güimar and climb to the Don Martin viewpoint for panoramic views over the valley. From there, we head south through traditional villages including Fasnia, Arico and Granadilla.

This rolling route tests your legs and endurance with continuous climbs and descents — great fun if you enjoy a physical challenge. Riding between 400 and 700 metres above sea level, we accumulate plenty of elevation. At Granadilla, the hardest part is behind us, leaving a 20 km descent to Playa de Las Américas for a well-earned rest in the sun.
